THE GREEN ISSUE: April
In celebration of Earth Day 2020
Every year on the 22nd of April, we come together globally to promote environmental awareness and how to protect our beloved planet in our everyday lives - Earth Day serves as a conscious reminder of the fragility of our planet, and how important it is to protect it.
2020 has been an unprecedented year, fuelled by the global outbreak of the Covid-19 virus. More than 2million+ people have been infected and Governments have reacted by implementing lockdown measures for their citizens, confining over a billion people worldwide.
However, let’s look at a silver lining…
The Earth has seen its quickest and largest fall in carbon emissions ever. With factories closed and car usage on roads plummeting to record lows, toxic gas emissions have been reduced significantly, improving air quality. One study by an American professor mentioned that the lockdown had saved 77,000 lives in China just because of the fall in pollution levels.
Thus, if there is one thing that this pandemic has taught us, it’s that sustainability is a collective effort. Every individual and corporation, by working hand in hand with governments and climate change groups, can contribute to creating a more sustainable Earth for future generations.
Our daily efforts
Here at 8MCollective, we’re extremely committed to being sustainable in our hotel operations. Our Director of Operations, Charmaine Wee, keenly summarises it in an interview for a Women’s Weekly special about Earth Day 2020: “Being environmentally friendly is no longer a trend, it’s a daily pursuit”. And some examples shared ‘Cutting down on paper usage across all our properties, considering better ways to be more energy-efficient, reducing our plastic consumption with filtered water stations and refillable dispensers in our rooms, and delivering a select-service model that encourages guests to only use what they need’.
The impact of global warming has a profound impact on every individual, and we all have a part to play in reducing our carbon footprint, starting today. The impact of one person may be insignificant, but as a collective, we will be able to create a more sustainable Earth for not only us, but for our future generations to come.
5 ways you can help too:
- Shift to anything reusable as an alternative to single-use paper or plastic bags, containers & dispensers.
- Reduce your AC consumption by appreciating Singapore’s early morning and evening natural breezes.
- Do a wardrobe edit and ask yourself ‘Do I really need all these clothes?’. Donate the items that can be reused.
- Reduce food waste by planning, prepping and storing your food.
- Take public transport instead of driving.
